Impact of Benjamin Franklin's Charts of the Golf Stream on the Shipping Industry

Impact of Benjamin Franklin's Charts of the Golf Stream on the Shipping Industry
The Gulf Stream is a gigantic river that flows inside ocean from the Mexican Gulf, passing through Florida Peninsula, the East Coast and to Cape Hatteras. The current flows into the Iceland, British Isles, and to Norway. Viewed from the Straits of Florida, the stream has a width of approximately forty miles. Its speed can go as high as five miles per hour. As the Current flows into North Atlantic, the width widens and can increase to up to hundreds of miles at some points. The amount of water carried by the Gulf Stream is more than all the amount of water carried by all the rivers in the world combined together. The flow of the current is aided by the Coriolis Effect, the differential heating of water by the sun and the wind current. As the stream moves, its volume exerts more pressure into the water thereby accelerating the velocity of the current.
Ponce de Leon first discovered the Gulf Stream and recognized it as an ocean current in 1513. He realized that the current is more powerful than the wind making his ship to move in an opposite direction to what he intended. Anton de Alaminos realized the existence of the current and started to use it for his advantage in sailing. As the main captain for Ponce de Leon he used the current to accelerate his movement as he sailed from the Gulf of Mexico. The Mexicans had realized the existence of the Gulf Stream but they decided to keep it a secret to other sailors. However, American merchants, captains of fishing ships and whale hunters had obviously known the existence of the current.
The current was first known as the Northeast Current before Benjamin Franklin, in 1762, named it the Gulf Stream. Walter Hoxton was the first person who endeavoured to explain the behaviour of the current. He was the first person to draw a marine chart which incorporated the Gulf Stream in 1735(Stommel 73). At various point of the, then, Northeast Current, he estimated and plotted the velocities. In his chart, he also included longitudes and latitudes. Hoxton also described the origin and the changes in velocities of the current as it passes various points. The British ignored Hoxton’s description and chart and commissioned Benjamin Franklin to start plotting new courses of the current and create a new chart.
By then, Benjamin Franklin was working in Britain with the British mail. All they wanted was that the mailing ships should not take a very long time while traveling from Britain to America. They have noticed that the mailing ships ran against the current making them to take too long before reaching America. With the resistance from the ocean current, the mailing voyages were taking additional three weeks as a result of resistance from the ocean current. The sailors did not have any knowledge of the current and as a result were faced by the problem of trying to sail against it. Franklin was a American revolutionary leader and was representing several states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and the New Jersey in England. He stayed in England for twenty years heading sectors such as the postmaster general for all the mails which were shipped to American colonies.
Working together with his nephew Timothy Folger who has been in the wailing industry for several years, Benjamin Franklin was able to come up with a new and more detailed chart. When Folger went to went to visit his uncle Franklin in England he overheard him complaining about the time taken by the mailing voyage from England to America. Folger then told him that the sailors definitely just don’t know the existence of the Northeast Current and how to how to prevent it from restraining the movement of the ship. He said that when the sailors know the current into details they will be able to use it to their advantage and even reduce the time of travel by more than just three weeks. The knowledge will also prevent the loss of other ships as they are redirected by the force of the current. The two sat down and drew a more detailed chart of the Gulf Stream. The chart also included the details of the stream which included the different directions of the current, the velocity of the current and the width of the stream. Numerous copies of the printed charts were distributed. However, the British did not take them seriously, maybe because they could not believe that the colonial fishermen could know more about the ocean than their highly trained sailors.
When the American Revolution Commenced, Franklin stopped distributing the charts so that they could not share such important information with the colonialists. When Franklin was traveling to France to Paris to negotiate a treaty with the French Government, he tested the various temperatures of the Gulf Stream. Franklin realized that the temperature of Gulf Stream was higher than that of the surrounding water. This was an important breakthrough in identifying the specific points where the Gulf Stream Occupied. Using this new information, Franklin commissioned Le Rouge to modify the chart which was initially drawn by Timothy Folger. The new chart provided for a more detailed location and specifications of the Gulf Stream. They supplied the new charts to the sailors from France who were supplying the firearms to American Colonies to help them fight for revolution. The original copies of the charts disappeared and were only retrieved in 1978.
The most important impact of the chart made by Franklin was in shipping weapons to America during the American Revolution periods. Franklin made a treaty with the French Govern which agreed to supply the colonial states with the required weapons for fighting. These weapons were to be shipped via the Atlantic Ocean. With the proper knowledge of the Gulf Stream, the sailors were able to take shorter time to reach America. The British on the other hand had very little knowledge of the current. As a result they took more time in reaching America with their weapons. As a result, the Americans were able to with the revolutionary fight hence they gained their independence.
The other important impact of the chart of the Gulf Stream was that it reduces the time taken by ships to travel from European countries to America. With the wastage of time in the way, the traveling cost increases in terms of the resources, food and fuel. With the availability of the chart, the sailors are able avoid traveling against the current and also use the current to increase their acceleration thereby reducing the cost and time spent in sailing. Currently, a more modified map has been developed from the original work of Franklin and these maps are used so that the sailing across Atlantic Ocean is not deterred by the current.
Without the knowledge of the Gulf Stream, the sailors used to lose directions and even lose the position of other ships in case they were traveling in fleets. At some points of the Gulf Stream, the current is so strong and was able to redirect the direction of the ship. By so doing, the ships will lose their initial direction and sometimes were never found again. The loss of ships also led to the loss of life of the crew as some we crushed due to strong currents caused by Gulf Stream. With the use of the Franklin Chart and the current maps, the sailors will always know the exact positions of the current, the speed of the current and the direction of its flow. This will help them to know how to direct the ship so that it is not redirected by the swift current.
The knowledge of the Gulf Stream was first important for the whalers. As they pursue the whales, they had to go across the current, into the current, against the current and along the current. The whales know that the currents could be their hiding place so as to prevent the fishermen from getting them. Without the proper knowledge of the current, they could easily be curried away or lose the whale at the least. Currently, there have been speculations to use the current to generate hydroelectric power. By knowing the specific points of the Gulf Stream with the highest velocity, scientists are anticipating that the current can turn be used to turn turbines which will eventually generate six thousand Giga watts.

Ming Qing China and the Edict of Imperial rule

Ming Qing China and the Edict of Imperial rule

The imperial rule in China was a proclamation from the leaders, who wanted to establish good trade relationship with the foreign nations like the Great Britain and India. During the reign of emperor leadership of Qing officials, there was relevantly true that the dynasty was in unstable position. In retrospect, the Qing dynasty was the last imperial reign of China that existed for almost three centuries. The links that China established with India and Britain was quite lucrative with these nations, thereby making them more attached to it. This is what led to the feeling of maintaining China an economic hub for these nations for their economic achievements. During the Qianlong leadership, there was tremendous population growth, yet less revenue collection in the region. On the other hand, there was too much corruption. As a result, there were too many disagreements between the public and the leadership. In reality, any nation that remains unstable can easily fall weak for the control by other foreign stable powers.
Due to these instabilities, European powers rushed to initiate treaties with the Chinese dynasties, in order to control their land. On the face of signing these treaties, it would seem that they were intended to help the region, yet were for the benefits of these foreign powers. In other words, the treaties lacked equity, targeted free trade agreements and territorial management. The most notable relevant, of the same was the move by Han Chinese educated group mutualized their efforts to protect the Confucian order and the Qing rulers. Meaning, the leaders had full support in their endeavors even when the public was against their moves. During the same period, numerous wars weakened the country’s economy and social stability. In fact, this created a loophole that these foreign powers followed to manipulate these leaders to follow their ideas. They ended up manipulating them with treachery promises that led them to adopt the ideas.
Moreover, the signing of the treaties led to economic and administrative transition from the original realm to the new paradigm.  There were changes in the mode of elections and educational management. These reforms came up with the antidotes that the populace could not c comprehend, leading to yet other uprisings. These disagreements and wars led to the total foreign conquest of China. Furthermore, during the period of imperial control of China, The communities became divided according to economic classes where the upper class became so powerful than the lower class. The upper class was collaborating with the government to exploit the lower class. This was vehemently against the traditional structure of the communities where people were doing things in communal organizations.
Initially, people of China depended on farming as the chief economic activity. However, the coming of the imperial rule in the land put more emphasis on trade. This move created more stiffs among the people, who were initially living together without any division whatsoever. In fact, with the new paradigm of economic direction, the dynasty focused too much attention on trade. Many foreign investors visited the region for trading purposes and later sought positions min the nation. For example, the European merchants from Japan could act as intermediaries in the trading process. In this precept, trade in China became more dominated with these foreigners than the locals themselves. A kind of foreign relations that was only directed to benefit a specific group led to social unrest in the dynasty. In fact, from the statements in the edicts, the treaties only focused on addressing the leaders but did very little min caring for the general folks’ welfare,
Besides, the period experienced disastrous moments from natural calamities like earthquakes, climatic conditions, plagues and internal rebellions. Many people died because of these circumstances. In reality, the coming of the foreign control in the region did much harm than good. For instance, the foreign powers scrambled to have autonomous control of the region leading to many destructions. For example, Japanese tried to wage war with the Chines in order to install their control in the region. Even though they failed, the war was so costly both to them and to the chines government. This demonstrates clearly that there were so many atrocities during this time that the locals could not smile about. It would have been better if this new move spreads its benefits across the region squarely. It is a common phenomenon for the leaders to engage on foreign agreements claiming to represent the will of the people at heart, yet pursuing their own interests.
In addition, the Ming Kingdom appeared to have continued with the culture similar to the Yuan and Song Empires. However, the empire took much of reflection from the western waysincluding religion and technology. Its justice system was also influence with the western thinking. Meaning, the land had to realize a new religion, social construction and influence. During the same time, there were the religious reforms in Catholicism. A group of elites was traveling all over the world to influence the changes in almost every part of the world. The Jesuits as they were called traveled to Asian continent, spreading some of their impacts to the Ming Empire. During this time, the culture of the Ming Empire changed, and even their ways of understanding was a reflection of what the Jesuits proposed. When the Jesuits went to Beijing, there were many converts, making the region popularly known for Catholic religion. Consequently, the Jesuits, Franciscans, and others imparted the understanding about Europe culture and Western skills. They went ahead and acquaint the people in the region with the East and its philosophy, and made the catholic the religion of the empire. This means that the culture of the Mings became very different from what it was before.
Moreover, it is worth noting that around the period of 20th century, there were mass civil ills that dominated the whole region of china. The government felt to do much endeavors to restore peace in the region. In other arguments, the social unrest might had been the reasons why the edicts were created. On the other hand, the edicts might have led to the social unrest. Therefore, the leaders had to be very keen and critical in making any decision that engages the welfare of the public. The experience of China has a lot to desire, and other governments can learn much from the same.

Criminal Case Scenario

Criminal Case Scenario

The situation involving Phil, his neighbor as well as Vince, raises significant issues that are worth consideration in holding Phil liable for the death of Vince. Phil's actions, as described in the scenario gives the District Attorney enough reasons for prosecuting Phil, and some of the significant issues, in this case, include anger management, malicious damage to property as well as the death of Vince that resulted from his unlawful behavior.
Even though Phil had the right to be annoyed by the general noise emanating from his neighbor's house, he had an option of pressing charges against his neighbor because the actions of his neighbor led to public nuisance. However, Phil's inability to control his anger prompted him to take the law into his hands, and in the process, he ends up engaging in an unlawful activity by shattering his neighbor's window glass by using his high power air rifle. The pieces of glass that broke as a result of Phil's deliberate shooting ends up killing unsuspecting Vince, who resided on the lower floors. Apparently, Phil had no intentions of committing any form of murder; however, his reckless behavior led to a loss of human life, and this makes him a murderer.
In the Common Law of jurisdiction, Phil is liable for trial under the rule of felony murder. Felony murder occurs when the illegal activities, shattering of the neighbor's window by Phil in this case, of an individual lead to the death of another person. Upon conviction, Phil will be subjected to a maximum of life in prison, remand terms or even death depending on the class of felony committed. Besides, the type of punishment to Phil also depends on the three-strike laws of the United States of America. Of immediate relevance to the Phil's case is the Tison v. Arizona, 482 United States 137. This section allows for the imposition of a death sentence in occurrences where there were no objective of committing murder but rather, the defendant deliberately and to a large extent played a part in an illicit activity acknowledged to carry a severe risk of casualty.
Conversely, Phil through his defense attorney may appeal for a bail or shorter jail terms, but this depends on the state of his case. Should Phil get a remanded, his chances of getting, a bond becomes impossible since in the legal statutes prohibits bailing off the defendant in remand as this may compromise the efficiency along with the reliability of the criminal investigation. Nevertheless, if Phil’s District attorney fails to hold Phil in pre-trial detention, his defense attorney may successfully argue his case, and may help him in beating the charges against felony murder charges on Vince.
The uniqueness of this criminal law scenario makes the establishment of justice exigent, and this calls for effective understanding and interpretation of the law. However, through the actions of Phil, the public can learn how to cope with difficult neighbors, and this is essential in the promotion of peaceful coexistence. Besides, behaviors of the two neighbors call for the need for awareness creation on the state laws along with human rights. Another important lesson from this scenario is the interpretation of the law, which is vital for the future judges and attorney because they not only get to learn how to be rational in arguing their cases but it also enables them to gain professionalism in their specialties.

Youth Development

                                                             Youth Development
The Office of Immigration Statistics (OIS), under the Department of Homeland  Security (DHS) released a report that presented the number of immigrants who have settled in the United State in the last one year. In their report, they cite that the United States of America admits over a quarter million migrants every year.Half of this quarter million is made up of youths and young adults who are either fleeing war in their countries or moving to America to seek more gainful employment opportunities.
The most significant challenge that youth immigrants face in securing employment is the language barrier. Most employers are not keen on hiring people whom they cannot communicate with thus the youths have to invest their time in learning the language. Statistics from the American Immigration Council (AIM) indicates that over seventy percent of immigrants who flock to America come from countries that don't speak English. The research also goes forward to suggest that over forty percent of this immigrants come from either Latin America or Arab speaking countries. Youth immigrants are not only barred from getting jobs due to language barriers but also the culture shock they experience. Most of this youth come from reserved cultures, and it takes them some time to adapt to the liberal American culture.
Another challenge immigrant youths face is stress due to exclusion. There exists a growing number of anti-immigration initiatives, which have been designed to prevent immigrants from receiving public services or job benefits.  These practices have lead to a pattern of segregation and intense exclusion in the workplace, housing, and schools. The result of this discrimination is an increase in the number of American employers who are unwilling to employ immigrants.Research conducted by OIS proved that immigrant youth face more discrimination than their elders because they are considerd more of a threat. Thus immigrant youth are the ones who are most affected with the stress associated with exclusion.
In a research published by AIM, it is indicated that a significant number of immigrant youths experience transportation challenges in the United States. These challenges have jeopardized their efforts to search for job opportunities as well as other ways to generate income for their development. Stakeholders have argued that the United States transportation system has made it quite challenging for immigrant youths seek job opportunities by introducing policies that compel youths to undergo screening in regard to their criminal records. On the other hand, immigrant youths experience challenges ascribed to mobility across the United States in search of job opportunities; this is a challenge that is currently experienced by both documented and undocumented youths: The access of drivers’ license among immigrant youths has been a challenging process majorly due to the language barriers experienced by the youths as they undergo language test proficiency.
There are certain education standards that are required by employment organizations in the United States. It is apparent that the employment and education standards of the United States vary from employment as well as education standards in other countries. Immigrant youths in the United States have experienced challenges in regard to access of employment opportunities due to the fact that their education standards do not meet the standards or benchmark of employment required by many companies in the United States.  In a research performed by the Center of Immigration Policy it is indicated that educational standards of majority of countries of origins of the immigrants do not meet the standards set by American educational institutions. Furthermore, as a result of their young age, most immigrant youth lack the experience required to work in certain fields. Consequently, employment exploitation characterized with subjection to poor pay as well as undesirable work environments has been a major challenge experienced by immigrant youths in the United States. Many immigrant youths have complained of extended working periods, delayed salary reimbursement as well as racial profiling in their work environments.
